Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.

The term Juneteenth is a blend of the words June and nineteenth. The holiday has also been called Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day. Often celebrated at first with church picnics and speeches, the holiday spread across the nation and internationally as Black Texans moved elsewhere.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

After the Civil War, three years after the Emancipation Proclamation, a group of enslaved people learned they were free. This Freedom Day has been a day of celebration.

For more than 150 years, this has been a day to observe that history and celebrate African American culture.

Happy Juneteenth Day!!
